I am excited to start sharing what I am calling MECC Shorts. Similar to the Workshop Ideas I have been sharing for some time on my YouTube channel, these videos are usually 10 minutes or less and grow out of the workshops and conversations I have with Catholic educators.
To make them easy to share, they are available for free, though I welcome anyone who wants to support my work and help me cover my production costs to consider upgrading to a full membership.
I also hope that many of you will find them helpful resources to spur conversation in contexts like staff meetings.
In today’s video, I tackle a question every teacher knows by heart: “When am I ever going to use this?” Rather than trying to justify every lesson by pointing to some future career or practical application, I suggest a different answer: you’re using it now.
Education is not only about preparing students for some imagined future. It is about forming the kind of people they are becoming today.
This perspective also changes how we think about curriculum. Much of what we teach is valuable not because it leads to one specific outcome, but because any good content—whether in literature, science, history, or the arts—should become a means of human and spiritual formation.
